There is rapid transformation in the trade services business, based in part on market pressure to reduce paperwork and be faster, more efficient and less expensive. Leading banks are focused on automating manual processes and reducing paper work in response to corporates’ increasing use of electronic channels. All of this is key to enhancing client experience and perceptions of “ease of doing business.”
Best-practice providers are digitizing processes and streamlining with automated capabilities (e.g., document generation, pre-populating data, automated online discounting, PO and invoice matching). As corporates look to their banks to guide the conversation on ESG and provide relevant incentives/products, differentiation will also increasingly require development and testing of new client values, such as supplier pay programs focused on achieving sustainability targets.
In order to meet rising client expectations, banks will need to harness digital innovation to improve operational efficiencies, as well as create new revenue streams using their rich proprietary datasets to unlock advanced analytics and drive client insights. There is high potential for long-term differentiation in the Trade Services business for those that can balance limited investment capital with a proliferation of technologies.
